Senior Journalist Rana Abrar Khalid Hospitalised At PIMS In Islamabad
Senior Pakistani journalist Rana Abrar Khalid, known for his role in exposing major corruption cases, including the Toshakhana scandal, is currently receiving treatment at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad, prompting renewed calls from journalists and civil society for the government to intervene and support his medical care.
According to colleagues and members of the journalistic community, Khalid has been admitted to PIMS in serious condition, sparking concern about the lack of institutional support available to veteran journalists who have spent decades in public service through investigative reporting.
Khalid is widely regarded as a fearless investigative reporter who played a key role in bringing sensitive corruption-related issues into the public domain. His reporting on the Toshakhana controversy and other accountability-related matters helped shape national debates around transparency and governance.
Despite his contributions to journalism, colleagues and fellow journalists say the veteran reporter is currently facing financial difficulties in meeting his medical expenses. The situation has triggered criticism of state institutions and media organisations for failing to provide adequate welfare mechanisms for journalists who have served the profession for decades.
Journalists have urged the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to step in and ensure that Khalid receives the best possible medical treatment. They have also called on state broadcaster Pakistan Television (PTV) and other relevant institutions to immediately clear any pending dues owed to him.
Members of the media community say the case reflects a broader problem within Pakistan’s journalism sector, where many senior reporters and editors struggle with healthcare and financial security after years of professional service.
Appeals have also been made to the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) to set aside internal differences and mobilise support for Khalid during his medical crisis.
