Can’t Anyone Just Be Normal?

This little sign-off of Lindsey Graham’s is so weird.

I’m all for counter-signaling and confronting the new (old and resurgent) antisemitism. But this sort of thing seems counterproductive. For many Jewish Americans, the connection to Israel is deeply personal, religious, and familial. That’s fine. For many American Evangelicals there is a theological commitment to the Jews as a nation, inclusive of modern Israel. For the rest of us, the alliance with Israel is a practical and commonsense thing. Together we develop shared technology and intelligence. Occasionally our interests diverge, but that’s normal among friends. But this weird baby talk is going to raise hackles and suspicions. Just be normal.
