Few American politicians of the past decade have been so effective at mastering the power of racial dynamics quite like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Highly fluent in both “intersectionality” and identity-politics, Mamdani cannily tied his platform of equity and affordability with the fate of his city’s “black and brown” masses.

So it was curious to learn this past week that since assuming office on Jan. 1, Mamdani has appointed zero Deputy Mayors who are actually Black — and just one who is Hispanic. Yes, zero!

This stands in sharp contrast with Mamdani’s predecessor — the African-American Eric Adams — whose administration was filled with record numbers of “Black and brown” New Yorkers. Same with Adams’ predecessor, Bill de Blasio — who was also married to a Black woman and has a pair of mixed-race kids.
