In the summer of 2008, the hockey world was bewildered when the Toronto Maple Leafs handed middling free-agent defenceman Jeff Finger $14 million over four years. It was instantly hailed as one of the very worst contracts in NHL history. One entirely plausible account has it that Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher had confused Finger with a different player.

This episode came to mind around lunchtime on Wednesday, as I stared in blank incomprehension at Prime Minister Mark Carney’s announcement that Marilyn Gladu, MP for Sarnia—Lambton—Bkejwanong, had joined the Liberal caucus. Her? Really?

Gladu is friendly and well-liked on Parliament Hill. And she made no secret about not getting along very well with Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, in particular criticizing his 2025 campaign. He seemed to consider her a liability, which at least on some occasions she was: One of her greatest hits included........
