Canada’s decision to shutter the office of the Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism is unacceptable and ruins the legacy of our nation’s commitment to the Holocaust. With some 70 per cent of all hate crime incidents across the country targeting the Jewish community, we are in a state of crisis. We are a nation that prides itself on promoting human rights, on preserving our rights and freedoms enshrined in the Charter, and in doing so, protecting our most vulnerable communities.

The office for the preservation of Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism was established in 2009 by the Stephen Harper government, as a founding member of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA). The organization, now consisting of 35 member countries and seven observer countries, was established to “remember the Holocaust, educate future generations on the tragic events of the past and strengthen governmental cooperation to work towards a world without genocide.”
