Albertans are addicted to their grievances. It’s time to break the cycle

Albertans are mad as hell, and they’re not going to take it any more. This is the prevailing consensus in Canada right now — and not just among the Conservative politicians and pundits who have spent the last decade actively encouraging that anger. In every pro-Canada communication I’ve seen lately, whether it’s new groups launching websites or Liberal MPs recording videos, there’s the same preamble: Alberta’s frustrations and grievances are justified and we have to work to address them. 

Just ask John Ibbitson, a former columnist and political writer with The Globe and Mail. “They are an angry people, and they have every reason to be angry,” he said while appearing on a recent CBC panel. “From the time the provinces were founded, when Alberta and Saskatchewan were not given the natural resources powers that other provinces had, to the latest regulation from Ottawa limiting the development of the oil sands for environmental or other reasons, Albertans have been put upon by a central Canadian elite, that looks at them as something of a colony.”

Bullshit, John. Alberta took control over its natural resources in 1930, nearly two decades before the Leduc discovery well that kicked off Alberta’s first oil and gas boom. Let’s also remember that the federal government — a dreaded Liberal........
