6.1 earthquake hits Turkey’s Balıkesir province
A 6.1-strength earthquake hit Turkey’s northwestern Balıkesir province Sunday evening (August 10) just before 8:00pm local time. One has been reported dead in the earthquake, which was also felt in Istanbul.
One building collapsed in Sındırgı, a small city in the southern part of Balıkesir province. Balıkesir Mayor Ahmet Akın announced the death of Nihat Önbaş, an 81 year old citizen caught under collapsed building rubble, late Sunday night. Four others had been rescued from the building rubble alive.
