SANDY, Ore. — Multiple people were killed and a Sandy Police Department officer was seriously wounded Sunday evening when officers responding to a domestic disturbance call came under gunfire in this small Oregon city east of Portland, authorities said.

Sandy Police Chief Patrick Huskey confirmed that one officer was shot multiple times during the incident near Ross Avenue and Evans Street. The officer was transported to a hospital and is expected to survive. Several other victims at the scene died from gunshot wounds, though the exact number of fatalities has not been publicly released pending notification of next of kin.

The shooting occurred shortly before 4 p.m. when officers from the Sandy Police Department and Clackamas County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a domestic disturbance involving gunfire. Upon arrival, officers and deputies came under fire and returned shots, Huskey said.

Witnesses in the neighborhood reported hearing multiple gunshots as the situation unfolded. Police quickly established a perimeter and requested residents in the immediate area to shelter in place and lock their doors.

By approximately 8:30 p.m., authorities announced the suspect was in custody and the shelter-in-place order had been lifted. The individual was taken into custody inside a nearby residence after a several-hour standoff. No further details about the suspect's identity or motive have been released.
