Meta Layoffs Shake Up Company as AI Reshapes Workforce

New layoffs hit Meta as the company races to scale its AI infrastructure.

AI is continuing to impact the workforce, particularly in tech. Meta Platforms reportedly laid off more than one hundred employees across several departments on Wednesday, with additional cuts expected in the coming weeks due to new AI-assisting integration in the company.

Reports of potential layoffs first surfaced via Reuters, which cited sources claiming that Meta aimed to slim down the company by roughly 20%. Those plans have become a reality this week, the company cut roles in Reality Labs, social media teams, and recruiting.

Latest Round of Layoffs

The new layoffs align with Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s push for efficiency within his work and the company. In 2023, Zuckerberg slimmed down Meta cutting roughly 10,000 jobs, reducing the workforce to approximately 67,000 employees.

“Teams across Meta regularly restructure or implement changes to ensure they’re in the best position to achieve ‌their goals,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement. “Where possible, we are finding other opportunities for employees whose positions may be impacted.”

AI Becoming Integrated Across Company

Meta has increasingly integrated AI across its operations, either in supply, assistance, or efficiency. The company has said it plans to invest $600 billion in data‑center infrastructure by 2028. Earlier this month, it acquired Moltbook, a social networking platform designed for AI agents.

A recent report from the Wall Street Journal also noted that Zuckerberg was using AI his own workflow. According to sources, the CEO is using an AI agent to help obtain information instead of going through multiple layers of the organization, reducing the internal lag time.

Senior managers at Meta told members of the Reality Labs division were asked to work remotely on Wednesday in preparation for the cuts, according to a report from Bloomberg. Reality Labs, the division behind Metaverse, experienced more than 1,000 cut roles in January as the company shifted investment toward AI‑powered wearables instead of real-world products.
