Using AI at the office can provoke strong reactions, and that may not be good for your business culture.

While the old axiom “honesty is the best policy” sounds good, fresh research shows that, when it comes to ‘fessing up about using AI at work, the opposite might be true. When researchers at the University of Arizona examined what happened when a worker admitted to their colleagues they’d used AI to help tackle workplace tasks, they found something confounding: Their colleagues said they trusted the AI user less.

“As researchers who study trust we see this as a paradox,” the scientists explained in a blog post on their research. “After all, being honest and transparent usually makes people trust you more.” Nevertheless, the data was compelling. “Across 13 experiments involving more than 5,000 participants,” the researchers found a “consistent pattern: Revealing that you relied on AI undermines how trustworthy you seem.”
