You should first check with your insurance company to be sure your policy covers additional drivers. It may be necessary to add your relative to the policy.

Q: I'm 94 and my wife is 90. Our children are on our case to give up driving. I don't mind giving up driving, but I don't wish to give up my car as it has a carrier on it for my electric scooter. Other people occasionally drive it to transport me and the scooter. Can I loan the car to my wife's brother, and if so, what documents will he need?

A: You can loan the car to your wife's brother, assuming he holds a valid driver's license. No documentation is needed.

But you should first check with your insurance company to be sure your policy covers additional drivers. It may be necessary to add your wife's brother to the policy.
