At nearly every point in my life, Melanie Lawson has been a steady light guiding me, and I've never told her that.
Today, my friend, mentor and sorority sister announced she's retiring from ABC 13, after an extraordinary 43-year run.
We were connected early. Our fathers, both now gone, were great friends from the same Kansas town. Melanie was my babysitter before I could string together a sentence, much less write a news story. My family attended Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church, founded by her dad, the Rev. William A. Lawson.

She later jetted off to the East Coast for Princeton University and then Columbia University, where she earned a joint degree in law and journalism. She practiced law at a prestigious Wall Street........
