All we want is a supermarket: is that really too much to ask?

It should not take an audience with the United Nations to make the case for a supermarket in our area.

But that is exactly what we, the 14,000-strong community of Castlemilk on the southside of Glasgow, did to try to secure one of our basic human rights, the right to access fresh, affordable food.

We have now seen the supportive recommendations from the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights who heard our case when we presented to them in Geneva, and we hope it will help us progress our campaign. They acknowledge that under the Committee’s Article 11 local people are indeed being denied the human right to fresh food.

The town of Alloa has a similar population to Castlemilk, but its residents have the pick of not........
