Ian McConnell: EU top choice in Reform constituencies – what next?

People’s views on what should be the UK Government’s top priority when it comes to trade, geographically speaking, might come as a big surprise to some Brexiters.

Amid the ongoing Brexit misery, the findings from a major poll of people in Scotland, England and Wales, conducted by YouGov for Best of Britain, provided a ray of hope.

Before we get carried away about what might happen, it is important to realise the poll findings must be put in the context of Labour’s “red lines” on Brexit (even if there have been some quite interesting comments from Chancellor Rachel Reeves on this front in recent days).

That said, the findings are stark and reveal that, even in constituencies which have elected MPs from pro-Brexit party Reform UK at the 2024 General Election, people believe that trade with the European Union should be the top priority.

Overall, people view trade with the US as significantly less important than that with the EU.

Friday marks the fifth anniversary of the UK’s technical Brexit. Of course, the real damage began 11 months later, when the UK exited the European single market at the end of 2020.

Thankfully, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has no plans to mark the fifth anniversary of Brexit.
