Boss of Scottish airport with spring in step declares: 'Loved it'

There seems to be much to look forward to on the future flight path of Glasgow Airport, writes Business Editor Ian McConnell.

He observes that Kam Jandu, who has been chief executive of the airport's owner for a year now, seems to have a spring in his step, with 26 new routes and services won by the team in the space of about eight months and major ambitions.

Glasgow Airport has been very much in the shadow of Edinburgh Airport in terms of momentum on passenger numbers since around the turn of the millennium.

“Loved it.” That was how the chief executive of Glasgow Airport’s owner this week summed up his first year at the helm.

Kam Jandu, who became chief executive of AGS Airports on January 28 last year immediately after the AviAlliance airports platform of Canada’s Public Sector Pension Investment Board completed its acquisition of the owner of Aberdeen, Glasgow and Southampton airports, highlighted major successes in winning new flights.

He was bullish about the prospects for other major wins, flagging potential for new direct flights to Pakistan, India and China. And he revealed talks with airlines about new flights to US and European destinations.

Mr Jandu was also very enthusiastic about all that Glasgow and the wider city region had to offer, and characterised the city as the “gateway to the Highlands” as he underlined the scale of the opportunities.

He highlighted the strength of the “toolkit” this provided when the airport went out to sell to airlines, when I interviewed him this week at The Herald’s offices on Bath Street.

It was interesting to talk to Mr Jandu again, now that he has been in his post for a year.
