Here's what to get your mum for Mother's Day - and it's not flowers - try a good wine

Mother’s Day is upon us, and if you’re still thinking that flowers alone will do the trick, I implore you to reconsider—because nothing says “thank you for raising me” quite like a glass of something deliciously fermented. After all, she can't drink a scented candle can she?!

Start with bubbles. Sparkling wine is basically confetti in a glass, and it sets the tone for celebration. A dry Prosecco or English sparkling wine delivers the fizz without emptying your wallet, though if your mum has a penchant for Champagne, now is not the time to be stingy.

If she’s the type who enjoys her garden, a fresh Sauvignon Blanc or a light crisp Pinot Grigio is a safe bet. And for the mum who survived your teenage years without having to turn to drugs, a plush Malbec or a ripe Cabernet are the perfect thank you.

The best part? A bottle of wine transforms Mother’s Day lunch into an event, and it gives you both an excuse to sit, sip, and maybe even laugh at that time you set fire to the neighbours dog with your new chemistry set. In short: pair your gratitude with grapes. It’s the least you can do.

The Lane Pinot Grigio, Australia

A lovely floral aroma with a refreshing palate of peaches and citrus. Crisp and clean on the finish. A cracking aperitif and a lovely partner for shellfish.

Corney & Barrow £16.95

Cline Cabernet, North Coast, California

A fabulous wine that's as well dressed as it tastes. The nose is full of ripe warm plums and leads into a bit juicy palate of blackcurrants and soft tannins. Superb with rich foods or a nice steak.
