Let’s Not Forget Cuba

Editorial by La Estrella de Panamá

HAVANA TIMES — The nightly pot-banging protests now echoing across Cuba are not only a demand for electricity; they are a symptom of a social and economic model facing its most critical hour. Prolonged blackouts, shortages of basic supplies, and the precarious state of services such as healthcare have pushed Cuban society to a point of exhaustion that goes beyond traditional political rhetoric.

Historically, external pressures have been blamed for the island’s problems. However, today’s reality suggests that internal mismanagement and the lack of structural reforms have deepened a crisis that now manifests itself in every household.

With Venezuela under external tutelage and allies such as Russia and China focused on their own military theaters, the regime of Miguel Diaz-Canel faces a historic solitude that no longer allows for rhetoric. Any path toward dialogue between Washington and Havana—one that includes economic opening or leadership transitions—must move away from failed formulas.

The current context demands a humanistic perspective that prioritizes the well-being of the most vulnerable over the survival of power structures. Cuba’s stability is vital to the balance of the region, and its future must be built based on a reality that no longer allows further delays regarding human rights and civil liberties.
