We need to challenge the patriarchal warmongers
International Women’s Day prompted me to reflect on Dale Spender’s observations in her 1980 book Man Made Language.
“Feminism has fought no wars. It has killed no opponents. It has set up no concentration camps, starved no enemies, practiced no cruelties,” Spender said. “Its battles have been for education, for the vote, for better working conditions, for safety in the streets, for child care, for social welfare, for rape crisis centres, women’s refuges, reforms in the law.
“If someone says, ‘Oh, I’m not a feminist’, I ask, ‘Why? What’s your problem?’”
Now, we hear Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s lazy regurgitation of United States’ lies that it acted to “prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon”, to justify Australia’s support for Israel and the US’ illegal war against Iran.
