Save Kashmir’s deepest lake from extinction!

If we can’t create something, we don’t have any right to destroy it! Deplorable condition of Kashmir’s deepest lake, Manasbal, is a glaring example of official apathy and public greed; prime reasons for vandalisation of our water bodies.

From crystal clear waters to a polluted lake, Manasbal Lake in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district has come a long way. What was an abode of pure water till a few decades ago is now a cesspool due to unabated pollution. Imagine the lake is a major source of drinking water for habitations in its catchment areas.

Despite being one of the major tourist attractions, Manasbal lake has been devoid of any scientific conservation measures. As a perfect example of ill-planning, authorities have over the last decade given preference mainly to construction of walkways, development of parks around Manasbal rather than saving the lake from drains of human habitations.

While all enjoy scenic beauty of Manasbal, we neglect countless drains emptying into the lake. Pollution coupled with siltation has caused irreparable damage to the lake’s flora and fauna.

It is said that the maximum recorded depth of Manasbal is 46 feet giving it the distinction of being the deepest lake of Kashmir. Extensive siltation over the decades from quarries, which has been closed some years ago, has reduced its depth. There is no measure for scientific disposal of sewage generated in adjoining areas and all drains flow into the lake.
