Last week, I had the privilege of moderating a conversation at the annual retreat for Black Women in Venture Capital, an organization dedicated to increasing the number of Black female checkwriters by tenfold. The conversation, which took place on Martha’s Vineyard and focused on building a life and career you truly desire, was off the record, but I’ve gotten permission from BWiVC founder Veronica Reaves to get two exclusive and on-the-record tidbits for you, our loyal ForbesWomen audience.
I’ll start with some very practical hiring advice that I heard from Dia Simms, a veteran business executive and founder of investment platform Pronghorn. If it feels like it’s impossible to hire in the age of AI-generated resumes, Simms has a brilliant sourcing method, and it all started because she realized that one of her most valuable assistants was someone who loved watching medical mysteries. “People who love medical mysteries or shows like House or mystery shows have kind of an innate desire to solve problems,” Simms explains. “So particularly in entrepreneurial environments where you need people who can think from scratch and actually enjoy it, we found that looking at [medical mystery] Facebook communities and IG communities has worked really well, more than just going to job fairs and checking on LinkedIn.”
What does hiring have to do with building the life and career you desire, you might be asking? Everything, I say. A good team makes all the difference, which is why I loved this creative hiring strategy from Simms.
