They may feel like a burden, but your household chores are valuable—literally.

A new study from the Government Accountability Office found that unpaid household work was valued between $5.6 trillion and $6 trillion in 2024—or about 20% of U.S. gross domestic product. Women were more likely to perform this work, which includes cooking, cleaning and caring for children or older adults. Americans spend an average of 3.72 hours a day on such labor, valued at about $70.

Looking at unpaid household work alongside GDP gives economists a “more comprehensive view of the economy than GDP alone,” the GAO said.
