Any business that has survived for 131 years — such as the Finger Lakes Times — has not done so without adapting to changing times. In fact, among the biggest changes has been the very name of the newspaper itself.

It began life on May 28, 1895, as the Geneva Daily Times, shifted to The Geneva Times in the 1960s, then settled on the Finger Lakes Times in 1977 to reflect a larger regional audience.

Soon, another of those major changes will take hold.

Coming the week of Sept. 13, the Finger Lakes Times will be reducing the number of print editions from five per week to three. We will remain a daily, six-day-a-week product, but we will only produce print editions on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays (and that means print AND the digital e-edition on those days, by the way). On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, we will produce only digital e-editions, which are available on your devices.

The reasons for the change in our production model are many, but most readers probably can guess the largest driver: costs.

Just as you all have been dealing with increased prices in the grocery store and at the gas pump, absolutely every single item and process used in creating and delivering our print product has gone up over the past year, some exponentially — from newsprint to ink to aluminum (the paper is printed using aluminum plates on a press) to transportation charges to delivery by the U.S. Postal Service.
