At Wood Library, our future is shaped by the voices of our community and it signifies a promise to adapt and grow for those we serve.

Through recent surveys and conversations, four themes rose to the top — Wood Library as a community hub, responsive programming, services, and collections, accessibility and inclusion, and best practice management. Together, these priorities form the foundation of our new Strategic Plan and chart an exciting path forward for the next four years.

Again and again, we heard a powerful message: Wood Library is more than a building — it is a place that brings people together. In a time when division can feel overwhelming, Wood Library is a welcoming space where respect, understanding, and connection thrive. We are committed to creating opportunities for meaningful civic dialogue, inviting community leaders to engage with residents, and fostering conversations that strengthen our shared sense of belonging. Through programs like our “All Are Welcome” series, children will grow in empathy and understanding, while adults will find opportunities to connect and support their well-being through social and educational programs.

We see firsthand how essential the library is to those who walk through our doors. For many, Wood Library is a safe and trusted place — a space where help begins when it’s needed most. Whether someone is navigating job searches, housing challenges, or food insecurity, our staff are here to connect them with resources and support. Looking ahead, we are working to expand that support through initiatives such as a grant-funded social worker and community resource events focused on life skills, employment, health, and stability. We are also committed to removing barriers to access — advocating for transportation, offering Books by Mail service for homebound patrons, and welcoming newcomers with programs designed to help them feel at home.

As the world evolves, so does Wood Library. By providing access to emerging technologies and lifelong learning opportunities. From computer classes for job seekers to workshops on digital safety and artificial intelligence, we are equipping people with the skills needed to thrive. Creative tools like Cricut machines, heat presses, and photo scanners will empower patrons to explore and create in new ways.

We remain dedicated to caring for the spaces that serve you. By thoughtfully maintaining and reimagining our building, we ensure that every corner reflects the needs and aspirations of our community. Through ongoing improvements, Wood Library will continue to be a place that feels welcoming, functional, and inspiring for all.

This Strategic Plan is more than a document — it is a promise. A promise to listen, to adapt, and to grow alongside the community we are proud to serve. We are committed to strengthening the library’s long-term sustainability and continuously improving the services you rely on. Together, we are building not just a stronger library, but a stronger, more connected community.

Jenny Goodemote is the executive director of Wood Library in Canandaigua.
