Are the sands beginning to shift on the UK government’s Winter Fuel Payment (WFP) cut?
Two weeks ago, stories emerged that Number 10 was considering a WFP policy u-turn.
That possibility was quickly quashed by Keir Starmer’s press secretary, who said: “We won’t be blown off course and it’s that mindset and focus that has allowed us to make the progress we have.”
But the wind’s been blowing. This weekend, we’ve “leaks” that Number 10 is considering whether to increase the WFP eligibility threshold so that more people of pensionable age would qualify.
It’s understood that Number 10 has carried out internal polling and focus groups on how voters would respond to potential modifications to WFP eligibility.
