I often think one of the greatest luxuries today isn’t buying something new. It’s knowing exactly who made it.

Knowing there was a real person behind it. Someone who shaped the clay, stitched the fabric, carved the timber, or polished the silver. Someone who spent years learning their craft and who still approaches every piece with patience, care and pride.

That connection feels increasingly rare.

We live in a world of instant gratification. We can order almost anything with a few taps on our phone and have it on our doorstep the next day. While convenience has undoubtedly changed our lives for the better, it has also distanced us from the people whose skill and creativity bring beautiful things into the world.

For me, that’s exactly why local craft has never been more important.

I’m incredibly fortunate, through Cork Craft Month each August, to spend time with some of the county’s most talented makers.

The members of Cork Craft & Design, a social enterprise representing more than 110 professional makers and artists, include ceramicists, jewellers, furniture makers, woodworkers, textile artists, printmakers, glass artists and more!

Some work from studios overlooking the sea, others from converted sheds, workshops or small city spaces tucked down streets you may pass every day without noticing.

Each studio is different. Every maker has their own........
