Former Canadian Alliance leader Stockwell Day recently sparked controversy by insinuating on social media that Muslim values are incompatible with Canadian values.

I know Day, although not particularly well. We occasionally shared a panel on CBC’s Power & Politics before he stepped away from his regular appearances. I respected his right then, and respect it now, to express views with which I strongly disagree.

But this time, I believe he is wrong. And his words have consequences.

When someone of Day’s stature suggests Muslim values are incompatible with Canadian values, consider what that says to young Muslim Canadians growing up in the only country many have ever called home.

It also begs an obvious question: Which Muslim values?

What are Muslim values?
