Primary Care Alberta recently declared a TB outbreak in our inner city. Twelve cases of active tuberculosis were diagnosed in 2025. This makes the incidence of TB among the unstably housed in Edmonton a little higher than the average of poor countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Two of the 12 died of TB very soon after diagnosis, before treatment could take effect. Of critical importance was the observation that 11 of 12 were homeless or unstably housed.

Tuberculosis has been around for centuries, but for people with healthy living conditions including adequate, well-ventilated housing and good nutrition, i.e. for most Edmontonians, it has become a very rare concern.  TB has long been recognized as the “poster-child” disease of poverty and disadvantage.
