The Conservative Party and their like-minded derivatives — such as the Saskatchewan Party — have an uneasy relationship with the First Nations and once again the issue has surfaced in British Columbia.

The Indigenous leaders have requested the removal of Aaron Gunn, the Conservative candidate for North Island-Powell River on Vancouver Island. Mr. Gunn has denied the seriousness of the effects of residential schools and especially denied the existence of genocide in the residential schools.

He posted on social media “There was no genocide. Stop lying to people and read a book.” He didn’t say what book, but if he was to read James Daschuk’s book Clearing the Plains he would get a clear and cogent image of genocide at work in Canada.

In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission called Canada’s treatment of Indigenous peoples genocide with special recognition of the residential schools. Also, in 2022, the House of Commons passed a motion recognizing genocide in residential schools.

The acceptance of genocide in Canada is now a matter of record.

But Poilievre remains steadfast in his support of Aaron Gunn and refuses to drop him from the ballot. The constituency has 20 First Nations located within it and a growing group of supporters also are........
