The great American wrecking ball actually did it. Trump tariffs of 25 per cent are now in effect on nearly everything Canada sells to the U.S.

Oil and gas are at 10 per cent but. It’s one ray of light in a dismal national scene – and not guaranteed to last.

The first dramatic response was quick to come. Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened to shut off electricity to northern U.S. states in response.

Our country is caught in a geopolitical hijacking.

U.S. President Donald Trump would be happy to join a hostile nation, Russia, in an over-the-pole alliance, with Canada caught in the middle.

From the Arctic to the 49th parallel, we would find ourselves staring at unfriendly, grasping forces.

Trump’s betrayal of Ukraine, played out on TV in the most sickening fashion, is a hint of what could happen to us. And Canada is far more important to Trump than Ukraine will ever be.

One way or another, although probably not militarily, Trump would pound us into submission until Canada agrees to some kind of economic union very much in America’s favour.

He has said as much. We will be subdued by “economic force” — those........
