Man who allegedly reversed car while immigration officer clung on charged
The incident took place on February 13 in Brandon on High Street during a day of action targeting suspected exploitation.
Ramazan Koksal, of High Street, Brandon, was arrested at the scene and later charged with dangerous driving, assaulting an immigration officer, two counts of being in possession or control of false identification documents, driving a vehicle otherwise in accordance with a licence, and driving a vehicle without third-party insurance.
He appeared before Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on February 16 and was remanded in custody.
Koksal is due to appear at Cambridge Crown Court on March 16.
The arrest happened after Suffolk Police and Home Office Immigration Enforcement officers visited eight businesses in Brandon and Mildenhall, following public reports of suspicious activity.
When officers arrived at a business in Brandon, a man fled towards a car.
A Suffolk police spokeswoman said: "As authorities opened the car door to engage with the man, he put the vehicle into reverse, with an immigration officer forced to hang on.
"A taser was deployed to apprehend the driver."
The operation involved Suffolk Police’s Kestrel Team, the Investigation Support and Development Unit, and the police Modern Slavery Tactical Advisor.
Two other men were arrested as part of the day’s activity.
A man in his 20s was arrested at a business on Mill Street, Mildenhall, on suspicion of possessing criminal property.
He has been released on bail pending further inquiries with Trading Standards.
A second man was arrested at a Market Place business in Mildenhall on suspicion of immigration act offences.
He is being dealt with by Home Office Immigration Enforcement.
The operation targeted cash-intensive businesses that may be linked to wider organised crime groups, such as barber shops, nail bars, car washes, fast food establishments, sweet shops, and convenience stores.
