Town motorists caught in the crossfire of parking scheme 'disaster'

East Suffolk Council has announced plans to withdraw the Resident Exemption parking scheme where town centre parking was used to create additional space for those living in or by them.

But for people in Bungay, this is a "draconian decision" that means parking in car parks away hundreds of yards away from their homes - and costing them nearly nine times more.

The scheme was introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic as an "interim measure" to maintain a balance between the parking needs of visitors and residents.

People who were eligible for the exemption permits paid £50 a year but if it is withdrawn, a permit in a council-owned long stay car park will cost £425 a year.

The arrangements were due to come in next month, but such is the anger in the town that the council has suspended its plans for a review to be carried out.
