Nesting parakeet stops works to chop down cemetery tree

But locals - who regularly flock to try to catch a glimpse of the UK's only naturalised parrot - cried foul and ruffled council feathers in an effort to stop the felling and prevent the parakeet from being evicted.

Some people also believe more than one parakeet lives in the tree.

Wendy Hammond, of Lowestoft, stood her ground in front of the tree and refused to move until investigations had taken place.

Mrs Hammond, who is a member of the Friends of Lowestoft Cemetery group and walks her two Labradors through Lowestoft Cemetery every day, said: "The parakeet has been here since Covid, about four years.
