Buckley moved to Norfolk in 2020 with her husband, Freddie, whom she keeps private, and the pair had a child together in 2023.

She was originally planning to relocate to Suffolk, but decided on Norfolk after finding an "amazing old house".

The performer, originally from Killarney, County Kerry, spoke candidly about her teenage struggles during a recent appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, crediting music and theatre with helping her recover.

Ms Buckley said: "I had an eating disorder, and it took time, and it took a lot of help, and also it was depression.

"I’ve been in therapy since I was 17, and I still go every week."

She has recently received a string of awards for her performance as William Shakespeare’s wife Agnes Hathaway, in the film adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel Hamnet.

During the interview, Ms Buckley described acting as 'essential' to her life, recalling an early performance where she insisted on finishing the play despite suffering from an almost-burst appendix.

She said: "When I moved to London, I still wasn’t out of the woods.

"I think there were moments where I was like, ‘If I don’t get better here, this music, this being part of theatre – I’m not going to be able to do this any more, and I probably won’t survive’."

Ms Buckley also reflected on her rise to fame on the BBC talent show I’d Do Anything, which led to public criticism of her appearance.

She said: "I don’t like that part of it.

"I think that was a young woman who’s trying to discover her body and herself, like we all do.

"And I wish that hadn’t happened."

She added that she is 'so proud' of her younger self and has no regrets.
