Village's fishing heritage under threat following battle with holiday home owners

Fishermen in Sea Palling are locked in a row with holiday home owners who claim they are being disturbed by activity at their yard, where they store their boats and gear.

The home owners have complained to North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) which has taken their side, raising serious questions over the future of commercial fishing in the village, from which fishing boats have operated for hundreds of years.

However, most in the village, including the parish council, have come out vehemently in support of the fishermen and are vowing to fight to protect the industry.

ROOTS OF THE ROW

The dispute centres on a yard around 100 metres back from the sea where several fishermen have stored gear and boats since the early 1980s.

When the tide and weather conditions are right, they use tractors to tow their vessels along a road, the Marrams, to the slipway at Beach Road, where they can get on to the beach.

However, the Marrams has several second homes and holiday lets on it and people have complained about being disturbed by activity in the yard. An aerial view of the boat yard (Image: Google) Following rising tensions, the yard's owner applied to NNDC for a Certificate of Lawfulness, to ensure the land had the correct permissions and to try to resolve complaints.

However, the holiday home owners lodged official objections with the council.
