BT axes plan to hang up on village's working phone box

A telecoms giant has backed down in a battle over a village phone box after locals formed a protest queue to use it.

BT has cancelled its plans to remove the working K6 phone box in Sharrington, which is one of only a handful of its kind left in the county, due to its "importance to the community".

The company had planned to axe the north Norfolk kiosk as only nine calls were made from it last year.

However, it has reversed its controversial plan following a very British form of protest when villagers formed an orderly queue to make calls from it to prove it was vital to their community.

Derek Harris, 89 led the campaign to save the beloved kiosk from what he called BT's "war of attrition".
