Greens take control of City Hall for first time in dismal day for Labour

The election also saw Reform claim two seats and the Liberal Democrats one.

The results mean that the Greens now have 21 of the council's 39 seats and have taken control of the authority from Labour.

The Greens' victory was emphatic, with the party claiming wards in all corners of the city.

Labour group leader Mike Stonnard watched on as his party fell to a crushing defeat.

"It's disappointing when you see really talented and hard-working councillors who have put in a lot of hours for their community lose their seats," he said.

However, he did not call for his party leader, Sir Keir Starmer, to step down.

"That's not for me to say. I don't have a vote in that and I think the party will need to digest what happened and make a decision about who our leader will be," he said.

Mr Stonnard said the party is leaving the council in "incredible shape" with some "big major projects" under way, and that Labour would be "watching them carefully and holding them to account."

The Greens' success in the city council elections followed a strong performance in the Norfolk County........
