Councillors receive dressing down over scruffy attire at mayor-making ceremony

However, it appears not every councillor got the memo...

Members of West Norfolk Council have received a dressing down for their sartorial choices at the authority's annual mayor-making ceremony.

Alexandra Ware, who chairs its standards committee, has reprimanded councillors after some turned up for event wearing jeans and trainers.

Ms Ware, who was voted in as chairwoman last week, sent an email scolding her colleagues as her first act in the role.

She said she found it "concerning" that councillors did not feel a "sense of pride or formality" in their appearance at official events.

"I know that judging the sartorial elegance or otherwise of any councillor is not part of my remit or responsibility as Chair of Standards Committee," she added.

"But could I suggest that councillors pay a little more attention to how they dress for important formal occasions and the messages that appearances give out to fellow attendees and the wider public," she said.

She drew comparisons with the smartly turned-out military cadets present at the ceremony, and closed with a quote from Tom Ford, the fashion designer: "You should put on the best version of yourself when you go out in the world because that is a show of respect to the other people around you".

To help her colleagues, Ms Ware - a lawyer - attached a copy of the Bar Council's dress code, which instructs barristers about how they should dress in order to "ensure the dignity of the court".

While she did not name those she thought had let the side down - and said only........
