Man took his own life after ‘devastating’ botched dental treatment in Turkey

Pawel Bukowski died in April last year after suffering a “crisis situation” triggered by failed dental work in Turkey. 

Norfolk Coroner’s Court heard the 48-year-old had endured significant personal loss in his early life, with his father dying in an accident when he was just 12 years old. He was subsequently raised by his mother alongside his siblings. 

Despite these challenges, he was later described as a “well-behaved, calm and gifted child” who completed university in Poland before working in Italy and eventually settling in the UK, where he had lived for two decades.

His wife, Daria Bukowska, who was a widow when she met him, told the inquest he had always taken pride in himself, but that his confidence was shattered after losing his teeth.

“He always took care of himself, his appearance and his health,” she said. 

“He was deeply broken emotionally, losing his teeth had destroyed his self-confidence and sense of hope. Despite our constant support, from me and his daughters, he was slipping away from us.” 

The court heard Mr Bukowski, a forklift driver, had been suffering from serious dental issues linked to periodontal disease, a chronic inflammatory condition that can lead to tooth and bone loss. 

In January 2025, he travelled to Turkey for dental implants after being assured temporary dentures would be fitted before permanent implants were placed months later.

However, the procedure did not go as planned. 

“Unfortunately, after removing all of his teeth, the clinic told him they could not proceed further,” Mrs Bukowska said. 

“They sent him home without any teeth and told him to return in six months. This was emotionally devastating for him.” 

Following his return home, Mr Bukowski, of Lovell Gardens, Watton, struggled to eat properly, and he began drinking heavily as his mental health declined.
