'We're still in shock' - parents call for transparency after death of newborn baby

Arlo Leighwood died just 46 minutes after his birth at the James Paget Hospital in Gorleston, in September 2023.

At a two-day inquest into his death, the court heard that he had been born during a forceps delivery in theatre after being manually turned there from a back-to-back position.

Prior to his birth, Arlo's parents Alexander and Alana Leighwood said they had been unaware of any concerns from midwives.

But the medical notes from the labour revealed a different reality, showing concerns over deescalating heart rates and abnormalities in a urine sample.

Mrs Leighwood, 26, of Highland Drive in Worlingham, near Beccles, raised her concerns at Norfolk Coroner’s Court.

In a statement, she said: "To this day we are still in shock.

"Alex asked multiple times if everything was going to be okay and we were always told that everything was absolutely fine.

“Therefore, to be told this repeatedly and to receive the outcome we did is absolutely devastating.”

The court heard that Mrs Leighwood became pregnant in December 2022, when she was aged 26.
