But the embattled leader insisted she had no intention of stepping down and "had a job to do" for the people of Norfolk.

Conservative MPs have not commented publicly on her comments, but there is growing unease at her remarks, with one senior Tory simply stating "OMG" when asked about what she had posted.

The County Hall Tory leader's Facebook post, sent to friends, showed her enjoying a tomahawk steak meal and a bottle of wine, with the comment "wonder what all the poor people are doing?"

Some within her own party feel Mrs Mason Billig should step aside because of her remarks, although she has said it was a private joke which has been misinterpreted.

A senior Norfolk Conservative had said: "I think she should resign. We are entitled to a private life and to let our hair down, but I don't think anybody should degrade those less well off than others."

It is understood other Conservatives also believe Mrs Mason Billig should step aside - but she is steadfastly........
