Warning as 'Nottingham knockers' target north Norfolk homes

Norfolk Constabulary has been responding to reports of potential 'Nottingham knockers' around north Norfolk, including in Cromer, Aylmerton and Gresham.

'Nottingham knockers' are cold callers who travel the UK, knocking on doors and trying to sell low-quality household items at inflated prices.

They usually claim they were recently released from prison and are trying to earn some money.

A spokesman for North Norfolk Police said: "In these circumstances, we would advise people to make sure their house is secure, front and back, before answering any doors, and if you don't recognise the person, to consider only speaking to them through a closed, locked door, if at all.

"Tell them you are not interested, and ask them to leave, despite any persistence.

"We would always advise you not to agree to buy goods from, or have work done by, anyone who calls unannounced or approaches you in the street.

"Sometimes such traders are operating fraudulently, and will target vulnerable residents."

Those who feel threatened should call 999 immediately.
