Villages fall out in border dispute over which parish WW2 airbase should be in

Now, Robertson Barracks - a military base in the heart of the Norfolk countryside - is at the centre of a somewhat smaller conflict, between two neighbouring villages.

The army camp at the site, which was known as RAF Swanton Morley when it was visited by the two wartime leaders in 1942, is set to close within the next six years.

There are plans for a huge development of 2,000 new homes on the 400 acre estate but this possibility has sparked a feud as the land lies within the boundaries of two different parishes.

The airfield pictured in March 1946 (Image: Norfolk County Council) While much of the base - where the barracks are located - is in Swanton Morley, the area which once formed the airfield itself - and where most of the new homes will be built - is covered by the combined parish of Hoe and Worthing.

Indeed, the border between the two is currently said to run straight through the former control tower, on the edge of the barracks overlooking the airfield.

Now, with the prospect of hundreds of new properties going up - each one bringing in extra council tax revenue to the parish - Swanton Morley is seeking to absorb all the land into its own boundaries.
