Norfolk MP demands urgent overhaul of farm animal welfare safeguards

Waveney Valley MP and Green Party co-leader Adrian Ramsay highlighted mounting evidence of "inhumane conditions, abuse and cruelty in the UK’s food system" and echoed calls from animal welfare organisations for the government to take swift action.

He led a Westminster Hall debate which followed shocking abuse recently filmed by undercover activists at a Lincolnshire pig farm, and "growing public concern" over industrial-scale livestock "mega-farms" - such as the recently-rejected proposal for a massive pig and chicken farm near Methwold.

"The treatment of farm animals in the UK is a reflection of our values as a society," said Mr Ramsay. "Yet millions endure lives of confinement, pain and neglect.

"This is not an isolated issue - it’s a systemic failure, linked to nature loss, climate breakdown, and the pressures facing farmers."
