Farmers urged to 'push ahead' early to hit government funding deadlines

Defra's Farming Equipment and Technology Fund (FETF) opened last week – offering £50m to support investment in equipment that improves farm efficiency, animal health and welfare, and slurry management.

The six-week application window closes at midday on April 28 - marking the final chance to apply under the scheme’s current format before it is redesigned for 2027.

Daniel Murphy, food and farming consultant for rural agency Savills in Norfolk and Suffolk, said farmers should apply as soon as possible to maximise their chances of securing a grant.

“This is the last round of the FETF in its current form and, because the window is short, farmers should prepare their applications sooner rather than later,” he said.

“Funding in previous rounds has gone quickly, and if there are planned or necessary items on the investment list, now is the time to push ahead.”

Defra has also announced the Environmental Land Management Capital Grants Scheme will reopen in July 2026, backed by an increased budget of £225m.

The scheme funds one‑off environmental improvements including hedgerow planting, water quality measures and rainwater harvesting.

Water‑related items will require approval from Catchment Sensitive Farming (CSF), and Savills is advising farmers to act now to avoid delays later in the year.

Mr Murphy added: “With competition expected to be high and some options requiring Catchment Sensitive Farming approval, early preparation is essential.

"Farms that identify what they need now – whether that’s equipment, quotes or starting the CSF process – will be in a far stronger position when the windows open.

"These schemes offer meaningful opportunities, but they reward those who are proactive and plan ahead.

“With Defra signalling a clearer, more predictable funding landscape ahead, the coming months present a valuable opportunity for farms to align planned investments with available support.”
