Terry Mayes, of the Norfolk Rainfall Association, said while last month was "probably the sunniest March on record" for the county, this was coupled with a "marked deficit in rainfall".

"Only March 2011 came anywhere near to match the dryness," he said. "But with this March being even drier, we have to go back to 1929 to find a drier March."
