The dramatic scene unfolded on Rouen Road following reports that a woman had been knocked out and had her phone and purse stolen.

The first four officers on the scene tried to speak to two of her friends but witnesses said they became aggressive and the police tried to arrest them.

The witnesses say the pair had not been responsible for the attack on the woman and that the two men responsible had already fled the scene.
