Sadly, my husband and I agreed to call it a day a few months ago after 20 years together. We’d grown apart and had been living separate lives.

We have three children aged between 12 and 17, who were, naturally, upset. We’ve stayed living together as a family while we sell our house and figure out the next move, which has helped the kids. It’s been tricky but, for the most part, OK.

Then, one night, my husband came home and asked if we could talk and said he’d had a few dates with a female friend of ours, who’s divorced and single. I did not see this coming at all. Suddenly, I’m feeling angry, betrayed and blindsided.

I called her and asked what was going on and she said she was planning to tell me and knew it was awkward but as my husband and I were no longer
