Trump’s GOP Midterm Convention Has a Crowd-Size Problem

If you believe the ranking Donald Trump keeps posting on Truth Social, he is considered the greatest president of all time. The president has also been praising CNN’s Harry Enten for acknowledging that “Donald J. Trump is six times more popular than Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, or any other President.”

You shouldn’t actually believe any of those “truths,” as the ranking is just some meme Trump reposted and he totally misrepresented what Enten reported. But it is true that Trump has a 90 percent job-approval rating among self-identified MAGA supporters. And Trump certainly believes he’s incredibly popular, despite what the polls say (that same survey put his overall approval rating at 33 percent).

So it might come as a bit of a shock to the president that next week’s Republican midterm convention has an attendance problem. Last week, GOP officials and operatives told media outlets they were dreading the event, complaining it was pointless, poorly timed, and expensive (lawmakers are being charged $25,000 and up to attend). Plus candidates expressed concerns about showing up to an event RNC chairman Joe Gruters dubbed “Trumpapalooza” at a time when the president isn’t popular outside of his hardcore base.

On Wednesday — just one week before the start of the two-day convention at American Airlines Center in Dallas — Politico reported that most GOP candidates and members haven’t committed to attending:
