Trump’s Iran War Is Now Officially Illegal
Despite President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that his widely unpopular military misadventure in the Middle East is going great and ahead of schedule and ending soon and completely over and majorly won (and both is and is not really a war), it’s now been 62 days since the U.S. and Israel began their joint air strikes — and the Iran war is not over.
While a cease-fire has held since April 7, the conflict has not been resolved; peace negotiations seem to be going nowhere; the global economic crisis continues thanks to the Strait of Hormuz remaining both blocked and blockaded; the threat of Iranian missile and drone capabilities persists; Iran’s regime is now even more hardline and its nuclear material is unaccounted for; U.S. troops have not been withdrawn; and air strikes could resume at any moment. The war, which has cost the U.S. as much as $50 billion and depleted a stunning amount of the Pentagon’s munition stockpile, is also now officially illegal.
According to the War Powers Resolution passed into law in 1973 in response to the Vietnam War, presidents are required to notify Congress within 48 hours of starting a military conflict and then withdraw U.S. troops 60 days after that unless it obtains congressional authorization or........
