Over 11,000 individuals have put their names to a petition in an effort to "save" Leazes Park from the potential development of a new stadium for Newcastle United. Chronicle Live readers however, are firmly in favour of the plans, saying a new stadium would regenerate the area.

Persistent rumours suggest that the Magpies might build a 65,000-capacity arena on the green space, following months of speculation about whether the club will opt for a new stadium or upgrade St James' Park. Although representatives from the football club insist that no definitive choice has been made yet, the idea of constructing on Leazes Park has raised concerns among those passionate about the environment.

Last month saw the group Save Newcastle Wildlife initiate a petition demanding a referendum on the proposal. By Thursday afternoon, the change.org campaign had attracted over 11,000 signatures, marking a significant increase from approximately 6,000 just a day before.

Save Newcastle Wildlife argues that building on the grade II listed Leazes Park, which holds the title of Newcastle's oldest park since its opening in 1873, would create a worrying precedent for parks........
